Cool Under Fire (Cardier) Oh, thinkin' bout the young punk - Oh, thinkin' bout the young punk - Oh, his mama said, my my Hard as he try Couldn't kick the junk. Oh, he got into a rumble out there - Oh, he got into a rumble out there - Oh, They said they heard a pop, pop Over by the bus stop - It's a jungle out there - Keepin' my cool under fire. Oh, she hit me like a big ol' kickdrum - Oh, she hit me like a boom boom chick a boom - One time, she left me high and dry Tear in my eye For a guy called Malcolm. Oh, shake me like a holy roller - Oh, love me like a storm in summer - Oh, play me like a violin - She do my head in - She's from Venezuela. Keepin' my cool under fire. Sometimes, you gotta walk the walk - Sometimes, you gotta talk the talk - Sometimes, you say now, now - Lock it all down - Gotta watch that clock. Sometimes, it's gonna come to the crunch - Sometimes, you got to follow that hunch - And you're out in the cold, cold - Y'know, you gotta roll, baby, with the punch. Keepin' my cool under fire.

A Case Of Mistaken Identity. (Cardier) Well, I was just dozin’ off When everything went berserk - I been takin' in a little undercover work - When all hell broke loose And the canary sang - I had my feet up on the desk When the telephone rang. Well, a voice on the line Said, 'Don't push me too far! Put the bagful of stuff in the back of the car'. He said, 'You're pissin' me off, you're makin' me sore!' I said, 'What stuff? What bag? What for? Oh no, it's not me! Oh no, can't be! This is a case of mistaken identity. Well, she come into the office And she called me a coward She had bumper bullets That would do a Cadillac proud - She said, 'I'm part of the deal!' I said, 'What deal is this?' Then she pulled out a pistol And she blew me a kiss. Well, I stepped outside For a little fresh air When a bomb blew out All my windows upstairs And a voice from the alley Said, 'It's later than you think!' I said, 'Can't we sort this out Over a coupla drinks? She's a femme fatale - She's got it all - She got the whole thing goin' Like Lauren Bacall - I got a second-hand suit And a stain on my tie I got a feelin' I'm bein' watched And I dunno why.

Welcome Home, Johnny-O (Glenn Cardier) Ah well, you say, 'Hey driver, that's far enough, Just drop me off right here, I'll walk it.' And you stop by the shop, And you make sure you got a gift for everyone - Well, you walk up to the door just like always And you hear the laughter comin' from inside - You stand there in the cold night air - You say, 'Is anybody there? Welcome home, Johnny-O - Good to see your face again - Back at the old place again - Back here where we all got started - Welcome home, Johnny-O - Tell me, where you been so long? Tell me what you gone and done? Everything's ok Now you're home to stay. Ah well, we all say things we regret - Could we forgive, could we forget? I guess so - If we could do it all again You bet your life we'd change a thing or two - You say somethin' in the heat of the moment And it's over in the blink of an eye And you just walk right out the door - You say, 'You ain't comin' back no more. Welcome home, Johnny-O... Ah well, the morning sun comes through your bedroom window Just they way it always used to - And down the stairs, the table is still set the same as the day you left - You walk through the neighbourhood, they say, 'Hey, Johnny! What you been up to? How you doin', man?' That's just how it's all gonna go down Upon the day of your return. Welcome home, Johnny-O...

I Wanna Know ( Glenn Cardier) Babydoll, what's your name? Is it Jane? Is it Suzy? Lucy? Judy? Mary Lou? I wanna know, I wanna know - Gonna find out if it's the last thing I ever do. Babydoll, who's the one for you? Is it me? Is it him? Is it Jim? Is it Joe? I wanna know, I wanna know - Gonna find out if it's the last thing I ever do. Babydoll, where d'ya live? Is it uptown, downtown? Corner of Hollywood and Vine? I wanna know, I wanna know - Gonna find out if it's the last thing I ever do. Babydoll, what's that song you're hummin'? Is it Opera? Pop? Didya just make it up? I wanna know, I wanna know - Gonna find out if it's the last thing I ever do. Babydoll, tell me what drives you wild? Is it a hug? A kiss on a night like this? I wanna know, I wanna know - Gonna find out if it's the last thing I ever do.

Impersonation Of The King (Glenn Cardier) You're callin' out my name again - And I’m the best that’s ever been - Y’all say that you never seen such a thing And I'm the dream you grew up on - You kiss the stage I walk upon - You scream and sigh with every song I sing And it's all in celebration Of my fine impersonation of the King. Love me tender, love me true - Can’t help falling in love with you - Got the hair just right, got the shades and everything - Got you all at my command - Reachin’ out to touch my hand - Pickin' up a coupla grand, and here’s the thing - It’s all in celebration Of my fine impersonation of the King. Oh, I need your love tonight - Comin’ on in a blaze of light again And tonight we'll drink it in And wish for things that might have been. Get yourself a Cadillac car, A flash suit, some bodyguards - Get yourself a sweet Priscilla waitin' in the wings And all is how it used to be - You'll be the one who sets 'em free - They'll come to worship at your feet again And it's all in celebration Of my fine impersonation of the king.

The Day I Fell In Love With You (Cardier) There had never, ever been such a day - The sky was never so blue And all of the pieces fell into place The day I fell in love with you. All our sorrows were put off till tomorrow And all of the news was good news For every last soul in the whole wide world, The day I fell in love with you. And the parade to end all parades rolled by And in the summer sun, the kindest deeds were done - It was such a time for each and everyone - The day I fell in love with you. And they said they'd never seen such a thing - And every word rang true - They laughed, they cried, They put their differences aside, The day I fell in love with you. And a thousand balloons rained down from the sky - There was never a care, we were walking on air - Everybody had all the fun of the fair The day I fell in love with you. The day I fell in love with you.

Win Some, Lose Some. (Glenn Cardier) Goin' to Hollywood where nobody grows old And everybody's gone from rags to riches - I been down and out, I been bought and sold - Things'd be different if I'd done what I was told - And I said, 'Win some, lose some'. Win some, lose some. Baby, you get me jumpin' this way and that - Been that way ever since I fell for you - Said, 'Baby, is this as good as it's ever gonna get? I'm your April Fool and it ain't even April yet.' And I said, 'Win some, lose some'. Win some, lose some. Hey now baby, that's the way it goes - I'm just rollin', rollin' with the flow. Some guy on tv talkin' bout world peace - Some guy on tv talkin' bout war - Some guy in middle tryin' to remember Just what they all come there for - Hey now baby, that's the way it goes - I come up just smellin' like a rose. Well now, Pablo Picasso painted like crazy - Pablo, he painted masterpieces - Some guy said, 'Man, you're the best on this planet!' Some other guy said, 'Pablo, my kid coulda done it!' And I said, 'Win some, lose some'. Win some, lose some.

Cold Light Of Day (Cardier) Well hey-ho, here I go With a whiskey bottle and a do-si-do And a bad hat - Here's to all you pretty girls in your party dresses And your twirls and tresses And your chit-chat - You say the world's about to end - Might as well fill 'er up again. Here's to absent friends and absent enemies And other absent stuff I haven't thought of - Here's to you and me, raise the glass Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition - Pretty soon, the smoke will clear - Oh, you should see it in the cold light - You should see it in the cold light of day - Cold light, everything changes in the cold light of day. Ah well, hey-ho, here I go Into the darkest night With all my new pals from the circus As a fire lights up the sky - I'm sure that brass band is playing out of tune On purpose - Here's to all my reckless nights - But you should see it in the cold light - You should see it in the cold light of day - Cold light, everything changes in the cold light of day. Well, here's to what's-his-name - The guy who said we'd live happy-ever-after - Here's to Mum and Dad, I broke your heart Not only that, I broke your windows - Might as well, just one more glass - The storm will pass into the cold light - You should see it in the cold light of day - Cold light, everything changes in the cold light of day.

Good To Go 03:40
Good To Go. (Cardier) Well, she dress to kill - She say she won’t but you know she will - Truth or dare, devil-may-care - She got the whole thing goin’ on right there From her head to her toes - She got the goods and she’s good to go. Well, I’m gassin’ up the car - Got some big dreams and sixteen bucks - Been down on my luck, don’t got much But baby, y'know I get the magic touch Every time I hits the road - I got the goods and I’m good to go. We gonna tear it up tonight - Everything gonna be alright - You don’t think twice on scotch and ice - Hell, this could be paradise When we turn the lights down low - We got the goods and we’re good to go. Ooh, gonna cut loose - Me, you, gonna drive this red dust rustbucket down the long white line of the highway. All round the world - Every boy, every girl - She got hers, he got his - Man, that’s where the action is - Same old scenario - They got the goods and they good to go.

Loretta 03:52
Loretta (Glenn Cardier) She drinks to the Apocalypse And not one drop spills from her lips - She dances like she's lost all rhyme and reason - She comes in dressed in shocking-red - Man, she's just outrageous - She says she's comin' back but she don't say when. Well, it's alright, it's ok - It doesn't matter anyway - She'll be bringin' a song for singin' - Don't leave me here, oh, oh, not now Loretta - No, not like this. She speaks to me in poetry - It don't make no sense to me - She kinda lights me up with her laughter - She teases me, pleases me - Sometimes she uneases me - She always seems to guess just what I'm after. Well, it's alright, it's ok - It doesn't matter anyway - I'm waitin', anticipatin' - Don't leave me here, oh, oh, not now Loretta - No, not like this. She drinks to the Apocalypse - Not one drop spills from her lips - She's skippin' through the ruins of my city - Now she's gone, gone again - Carved her initials in the head of my bed - She never even said she's gonna miss me - Well, it's alright, it's ok - It doesn't matter anyway - She'll be bringin' a song for singin' - Don't leave me here, oh, oh, not now Loretta - Don't leave me here, oh, oh, not now Loretta - No, not like this.

Rise And Shine (Glenn Cardier) Rise and shine, little one, Rise and shine on this fine morning - The night has gone, the sun is up, Come look outside, it's just amazing - Little one, it's time to see Everything there is to see - There's a new day breaking. Rise and shine, little one - Now's the time for adventure - Climb your trees, skin your knees - Sail your seas, paint your picture - Little one, it’s time to dance with Raggy Doll - It’s time to stand on battleground - A box of sand, an old toy soldier. Rise and shine, little one, Rise and shine, the world is waiting - Paper planes, plastic trains - A perfect day for slaying dragons - Little one, it’s time to dream - Time to be all you could be - Time to run, time to play In this garden of flowers on this marvellous day - Rise and shine, little one, rise and shine.

The Last Jukebox (Cardier) Took a wrong turn - Took a wrong turn - Dark of night, somewhere out in the middle of nowhere - Took a wrong turn. Just a ghost town - Just a ghost town - XXXX sign bangin' in the cold wind - Just a ghost town, well - Ooh, S'gonna be alright Used to be a grand old place - Used to be a grand old place - Dust on the chandelier, gold paint peelin' - Used to be a grand old place. Just might be the last jukebox - Just might be the last jukebox - How the hell's this thing still got electricity? Just might be the last jukebox, well - Only one thing left to do - Only one thing left to do, baby - Come on now, come over here, s'gonna be alright - Only one thing left to do - Dance.

'A tour de force! This is, unmistakably, the inimitable Glenn Cardier...' (Ian Dearden)

'Cool Under Fire is a rich helping of what we love about Cardier. The songs are wry and droll, many illuminated with a cinematic glare or dark-street noir...' (John Hardaker, wordsandpress)

about

Glenn Cardier Sydney, Australia

Post 2000, Glenn Cardier’s re-emergence as a songwriter/performer of real distinction has been nothing short of extraordinary. In typical single-minded fashion, he writes, performs and produces his music. Onstage, there are the trademark flashes of dark humour and thumping rockabilly/blues. But underlying it all are the songs. Happy/sad songs. Sweet/crazy songs. Cardier songs. CDs on the website. ... more
