Lovers Alias Fools
(Cardier)
Tell me about the man that was me.
How did he see the love hiding?
Did you discover that he was to be
A stranger you'd known all this time?
Tell me, did you say that you were lonely today?
I was anyway. Yes, I was anyway.
And tell me, did you say we never kept to the rules?
But we're only lovers alias fools.
Tell me about the woman I knew.
How she held the clues to my mind.
She's always been the woman in you,
A stranger I've known all this time.
Tell me, did you say that you were lonely today?
I was anyway. Yes, I was anyway.
And tell me, did you say we never kept to the rules?
But we're only lovers alias fools.

The Darlings Of Market Street
(Cardier)
The darlings of market street go laughingly by
And meet in the marketplace to live out their lives.
Wearing arm-bangles and hair done in tangles,
They'll sell you the world for a smile.
'Cos they'll sell holy on Sunday,
The drinks of the moon
And the whispers for lovers to speak.
And they'll sell goodbyes for lifetimes
And light in the night-time
Every day of the week.
Down come the sparrows round the wheelbarrows.
Dark-eyed children come calling their tunes
And all the bright faces, so like marketplaces,
They'll sell you a welcome or two.
'Cos they'll sell holy on Sunday,
The drinks of the moon
And the whispers for lovers to speak.
And they'll sell goodbyes for lifetimes
And light in the night-time
Every day of the week.

Anniversary
(Cardier)
I remember when we first met -
Let me remind you before I forget.
The moon was up, the sun was down -
I was wearing my sand-shoes
But your wore a gown -
And the following day
You went walking with me -
So I wore my new suit but you,
You were wearing your jeans.
And I suppose that you could say
Things just happened in their usual way -
Remember the flowers that I dropped?
And I did not know what they were -
I never knew what you preferred
But they had ribbons round the top.
Today, we really know each other well -
All I'm thinking - you can tell -
And tomorrow night we'll be going to town
And I'll wear my new suit and you,
You'll be wearing a gown.

New-Born Babe
(Cardier)
New-born babe -
Don’t know nothin’ bout the ways of the world
Or astronauts up on the moon
Or witches on brooms.
New-born babe -
Don’t know nothin’ bout the politics of people
Or chess pieces or old churches -
You just know your mother.
New-born babe -
Don’t know nothin’ bout the way it’s gonna be
Or clown faces or masterpieces
Or love affairs or rockin’ chairs.
I see you sleepin’ away.
Gettin’ older every day.

Ulysses
(Cardier)
Would you wait at the gate for me, lady,
If I was called a captain and then
But I fought every war till the savages ran outa men?
Would you cry if I left for adventure?
Would you polish my glasses and say
That my cough would get better
In Egypt or down China way?
When you think of the things that he has said and did
In his journeys all over the world -
On Ulysses command, they all ran and they hid
And I think he wore glasses when he was a kid.
Now everybody knows everybody grows.
There were kings, there were queens, there were heroes
Who would sing when they’d been in the rain
And they’d always forget to wear singlets in Asia or Spain -
Well, I want to be brave, I want to be mean -
I won’t bite my nails, I’ll be clean -
So lady, would you wait if I were a great human bein’?
When you think of the things that he has said and did
In his journeys all over the world -
On Ulysses command, they all ran and they hid
And I think he wore glasses when he was a kid.
Now everybody knows everybody grows.

Tin Minstrel
(Cardier)
Don’t say where, don’t say when, don’t say nothin’ -
Oh please, say no more -
Don’t say how, don’t say why, I just love you
And I play this serenade to be sure.
Yes, I play the serenade and you say you love it -
You do not know that my tin minstrel wrote it -
And I hid him in the night so I might be the only one to sing it -
And you would smile as you dance around the carpet.
Well, I could never write and play in a tin minstrel way
So I left him in the forest overnight -
I heard him play his serenade until it rained, until it rained
And ever since, the forest has been so quiet.
Don’t say where, don’t say when, don’t say nothin’ -
Oh please, say no more -
‘Cos I fear that someday you’ll want a different serenade
And how I’m gonna to write down?
I’m not sure.

Every Wounded Bird
(Cardier)
Once, you counted on your earth to find you -
Wonder where your earth has gone to -
Every wounded bird can tell you.
Once, you counted on your sky to fly to -
Wonder where your sky has gone to -
Every flying bird will know.
To be everything you counted to be -
Everything you counted -
I can keep the score, I can keep the score,
I can keep the score and did you ever wonder
Once, always knew your earth
And once, you wondered of your sky
And once, you counted every wounded bird.
To be everything you counted to be -
Everything you counted -
I can keep the score, I can keep the score,
I can keep the score and did you ever wonder
Once, you counted on your sky to fly to -
Wonder where your sky has gone to -
Every flying bird will know.
Every flying bird knows where every flying bird goes -
Do you wonder where they go to?
Every wounded bird can tell you.

I Am The Day
(Cardier)
I am the day begun with the sun -
I will say with my morning light
Awake, gentle one -
And you and I will see the flying thing circling -
I am the day, I am the day.
You are the night, you take me away
And you might whisper when we meet
Sleep, if you may -
And you and I will see the flying thing circling -
You are the night, you are the night.
And we were the circle, we were turning -
Learning the circle will not bend -
No, the circle will not bend
And there is no beginning,
And there is no beginning -
And there will never be an end.
You are the night, you take me away
And you might whisper when we meet
Sleep, if you may.
I am the day begun with the sun -
I will say with my morning light
Awake, gentle one -
And you and I will see what any two in love may see -
Every night and every day -
And you and I will see what any two in love may see -
You are the night, I am the day
And we will see the flying thing circling away.

Cars
(Cardier)
My old jalopy rolled a history ago.
Everyone loved a car.
I was your dizzy, dizzy fool
In racin' goggles and a scarf.
Drunk with power,
Twenty miles an hour.
It's been some years now.
All thrown away.
Grass growin' through the seats.
Obsolete.
It's been some years now
Since the last one went down
And now, I see 'em all rusting in the ground.
Just as far as the eye can see.
Miles and miles of cars.
Miles and miles of cars.

Dance Numbers
(Cardier)
Hey mister, tell me why all the folks are dancin’ by -
Down the ghetto streets they fly to the sound of a band
Driftin’ from thin air -
Mister, I don’t understand.
Hey hey, gracious me! Shoppers waltzin’ ‘cross the street -
Newsboys round a taxi-fleet, finger-snappin’, lookin’ good -
Just like a musical from Hollywood.
Singin’, East Side, West Side, all around the town -
All the dance numbers, they never let you down.
The traffic cops are so unique -
They’re spick and span, dancin’ cheek to cheek -
And from an alley, in a chorus-line
The winos skip about -
Oh mister, why do I feel so light on my feet now.
Singin’, East Side, West Side, all around the town -
All the dance numbers, they never let you down.
Hallelujah! They look so good -
Every poor man’s a dancer -
Just like a musical from Hollywood
It’s a grand extravaganza -
And when it gets back to the way it used to be -
Well, I’ll just get a ticket for the train,
The train to Hollywood, I guess.
Singin’, East Side, West Side, all around the town -
All the dance numbers, they never let you down.

Butterfly Net
(Cardier)
I'm just an everyday maniac.
You'll find me laughing round behind your back.
I look so smart in my safari hat.
You bet!
Running around you with my butterfly net.
If you sleep, I will catch your falling zeds
Floating down to the floor around your bed.
If you dream, as your dreams begin to rise
While you sleep,
I'll catch the ones I'd like to keep.
And for your words that hover in the air,
I'll probably reach them standing on a chair.
I'll net a couple before they're gone.
I'll file them all away for later on.
Above your head your thoughts appear to grow.
They curl and glide toward the open window
But I'll be holding my butterfly net
Ready for protection.
I save them all for my collection.
I'm just an everyday maniac.
You'll find me laughing round behind your back.
I look so smart in my safari hat.
You bet!
Running around you with my butterfly net.

The Iridescent Pink Sock Blues
(Cardier)
Well, you gotta slouch around
With your zipper halfway down (on your jacket)
With your jeans on your hips
And a sneer on your lips
And your hair about as high as you can stack it -
You gotta wear your eyebrows low
With your pockets fulla cigarette packets.
Got them iridescent pink sock blues -
Ma, you don't know what hell this is -
My hair don't look like Elvis's!
The iridescent pink sock blues -
From my shiny oily hair
To my shiny pointed shoes, uh huh.
Well, you gotta draw tattoos
On your muscles with a ballpoint pen
(And on your knuckles too!)
And you gotta have your sleeves rolled up so tight
That the tips of your fingers turn blue -
And my collar won't stay up
And my sideburns won't grow down!
Ma, what am I gonna do?
I got them iridescent pink sock blues -
Ma, I don't need babyin',
I wanna be like Fabian!
The iridescent pink sock blues -
From my shiny oily hair
To my shiny pointed shoes, uh huh.
Oh yeah, alright!
Got them extra shiny bright, see 'em in the night,
Phosphorescent, incandescent, iridescent pink sock blues.

Oh Dear Saint Peter
(Cardier)
Yahoo! Do-si-do! Clodhoppin’ as we go -
Grandma's hobnail boots are shone -
Pappy's gone trigger-happy with his gun -
Knee-slappin' fiddlers three -
Hey diddle diddle and clappin' free -
Bullet-riddled body on the ballroom floor -
All join hands and dance some more.
Oh dear, Saint Peter.
Don't wait up for me.
Yee-ha! Circle round -
The girls in gowns, up and down -
Uncle stinkin' drunk on pink lemonade -
Promenade, buckle my shoe -
Dancin' to a knuckle-duster tune -
Pantaloons and chinny-chin-chin -
Junior's got a hatchet and a great big grin -
Sashay up and all join in.
Oh dear, Saint Peter.
Don't wait up for me.
Whoops-a-daisy! Allamande right -
Shake her hand, say goodnight -
City fight, ding dong dell -
Bloodshed right where the spotlight fell -
Pretty maids all in a floodlit row -
Do-si-do, winkin' eyes -
Junior's got a shovel and a lovely smile -
All join hands and dance awhile.
Oh dear, Saint Peter.
Don't wait up for me.

(Cardier)
Well, I always thought you were a hip, hip cat
But you say that this flat world just ain’t flat?
Well, by Jupiter, you don’t get no stupider,
You don’t get no stupider than that.
Well, I know a lotta guys dropped over the side -
You say you happen to know that just ain’t right -
Well, ye gods! You don’t get more oddball,
You don’t get more oddball than that.
So it’s hail and farewell, hail and farewell -
You say you’re settin’ your eyes on the new horizon -
Well, I say you’re headin’ for the edge of the world.
Well, you say this old world is as round as a ball -
Well now, whaddya some kinda radical -
By Neptune’s beard, you don’t get no weirder,
You don’t get no weirder than that.
So it’s hail and farewell, hail and farewell -
You say you’re settin’ your eyes on the new horizon -
Well, I say you’re headin’ for the edge of the world.
So it’s hail and farewell, hail and farewell -
You say you’re settin’ your eyes on the new horizon -
Well, now there ain’t no flies on me ‘cos I’m wise
And I’ll say you’ll be so surprised
That you’ll laugh till you cry
When you get to the edge of the world.

Love At First Sight
(Cardier)
I useta bump into this and bump into that
Till the doctor told me I was as blind as a bat
So he gave me a pair of spectacles.
I said, spectacles.
I said, 'Hey doc, that'll make matters worse!
I been so unlucky in love that it's a curse!'
He said, 'Well, well, well, I'm not surprised
Four eyes!'
Just as I was leavin' I saw this gal
And she saw me alright.
She had a brand new pair of spectacles too
And it was love at first sight.
So in slow motion I ran across that room
As an orchestra played the 'Blue Danube'.
She threw off her glasses and I threw off mine.
We could only see eye to eye.

Please Don't Eat The Flowers, Dear.
(Cardier)
You are hardly sad
As the mad howl of night-time all dies down
And the tail of the pale moon slips from view
And your mind frees a skipping child
You once knew.
Please don't eat the flowers, dear.
You may be seen, you may be seen.
If you must eat the flowers, dear.
Eat them secretly,
Dear.
You are so sublime
As the jaws of the morning slowly open
And underneath the teeth of sunshine
You try to find a lifetime
To believe in.
Please don't eat the flowers, dear.
It's just not done, it's just not done.
If you must eat the flowers, dear.
Do it alone,
Dear.
You are a happy kid again
Skipping by the claws of the wilderness
With your doll
But it was violated somewhere along the line
And now even little children seem horned sometimes.
Well, I was a skipping child once too you know.
And there's a crowd of people standing over there.
Well, I don't care. I don't care.
These flowers sure taste sweet today.
Please, lead me away,
Dear.

Same Old Story
(Glenn Cardier)
Say isn’t this, isn’t this where I come in
With a rose in my teeth and my teeth in a grin?
So darlin’, darlin’, don’t you be so sad this time -
Somethin’ tells me things are gonna be fine, just fine.
Ooh, same old story all over -
Ooh, think I seen it all before -
I’m so sure.
Say isn’t this, isn’t this the street we’ll go down
Where fat men always slip on the only banana skin in town?
So darlin’, darlin’, don’t you know it’s all for the time
When I knew I was yours and you knew you were mine, all mine.
Ooh, same old story all over -
Ooh, think I seen it all before -
I’m so sure.
Say isn’t this a bit like the old show-biz?
There’s a moral to it all -
Yeah, but I dunno what it is,
Dunno what it is.
Ooh, same old story all over -
Ooh, think I seen it all before -
I’m so sure.

I Saved Annette From Drowning
(Cardier)
Well, I saved Annette from drowning late one afternoon -
Oh yes, I just heard the sound of someone calling -
All the beaches were deserted, I thought I was alone
But I saw footprints in the sand where I was walking.
Well, I saved Annette from drowning and I reached her just in time
Oh, around about us all the waves came crashing -
And it left us both so breathless as we made it to the shore
Oh, the sea was dark and seemed like it was laughing.
And sometimes, I think about it just like it was yesterday -
And sometimes, it seems like I was only dreamin’ it -
And you see it all so clearly and then it fades away
But I still hear the way Annette said, ‘Hey! We’re makin’ it,
Makin’ it!’
Well, I saved Annette from drowning, I said, ‘Swim between the flags.’
Oh she said, ‘Hey, let’s forget our obligations.’
By the shoreline, we were standing late one afternoon -
Oh, it felt just like the first day of vacation.

I See A Comedy
(Cardier)
A jacket of leather, a hat made of feathers,
A blade from a razor, the keys to my car -
I'm going out now, down by the shelter,
Round by the crater, hip-hip-hoorah -
I'm going out now to see my companions
Down in the canyons of streets -
My mind is so scenic but I'm schizophrenic -
I keep looking down at the spit on the ground
At my feet.
I see a comedy, I hear a melody -
Everything seems to be fine -
So put all the latches and all the catches
On the doors and the windows -
We may have a good time.
I got a jacket of leather, a hat made of feathers,
A blade from a razor, the keys to my car -
I'm going out now, down by the shelter,
Round by the crater, hip-hip-hoorah -
I'm going out now to see my lady
Made up in furs, so refined -
She'll say that she likes my knees -
I'll say marry me please -
We'll take off our revolvers and we'll kiss goodnight.

Spaghetti Western
(Cardier)
It’s a spaghetti western, spaghetti western starring Sam Michelangelo -
It’s a blistering battle for the Sistine Chapel down around Mexico -
But here come some Italians gallopin’ on stallions just as Sam’s runnin’ out of ammo -
They just happen to be in the vicinity on the way to Californy-oh.
Singin’ yippie yi yay, yippie yi yo -
Oh, Mama Mia.
Meanwhile back along the track it’s just about high noon
And sweet Sarah Madonna with a bonnet upon her dances in the Last Supper saloon -
She’s a-thinkin’ of Sam ‘cos he is her man, she got the Ave Maria blues -
She sings him operettas about the vendettas, makes him offers that he can’t refuse.
Singin’ yippie yi yay, yippie yi yo -
Oh, Mama Mia.
Well, the badmen are shot and Sam is not (‘cept for a flesh-wound in the shoulder)
And all the way down the street, the folks are kissin’ his feet
And Sarah’s tellin’ him to hold her -
But the wound goes mean and gets gangrene and Sam dies in agony -
And away runs Sarah with a millionaire who runs whisky to the Cherokees.
Singin’ yippie yi yay, yippie yi yo -
Oh, Mama Mia.

Glenn Cardier Sydney, Australia
Post 2000, Glenn Cardier’s re-emergence as a songwriter/performer of real distinction has been nothing short of extraordinary. In typical single-minded fashion, he writes, performs and produces his music. Onstage, there are the trademark flashes of dark humour and thumping rockabilly/blues. But underlying it all are the songs. Happy/sad songs. Sweet/crazy songs. Cardier songs. CDs on the website. ... more
